More Civic Figures Visit PCS

What an afternoon for the school-wide “Civics: Citizens and Communities in Action” integrated Unit! PCS welcomed local community members to both the Upper and Middle Primary classes to work with students in their areas of focus.
Greg Doroski grew up on the East End and is a candidate for Southold Town Supervisor. He spoke with Middle Primary students about his motivation for seeking a position in town government, his platform, and how town government works to meet a community’s needs, before opening the discussion up to hear about the issues most important to Middle Primary students. Pretty sure he left knowing a lot more about the need to protect turtle habitats than he did when he arrived!
In Upper Primary, Lori Cohen, a criminal defense lawyer and CUNY professor of Constitutional Law worked with students to understand: the powers and limitations of the Constitution, historically and currently; how and why the Constitution was created; how amendments work; and how laws interpret the Constitution.
As a community school, we prioritize working with and within our community, and we are so grateful for each visitor: they offer such incredible opportunities for students to conduct first-hand research and experience how communities and governments collaborate.
