An Ode to Teachers
Did you happen to catch our Facebook posts all week? If not, you can see them all below. In honor of Administrative Professionals Day & Teacher Appreciation Day (or week, depending on who you ask), we've been reflecting on our absolutely incredible team and what that means for the quality and integrity of this school.

PCS Maker Faire a Resounding Success
The first ever Peconic Community School Maker Faire, held on Saturday, March 12th was a resounding success. Hundreds of people gathered in the gymnasium of the Riverhead Charter School in Calverton to build, play, create, learn, innovate and engage in all things “Maker.” As you walked into the space, you could feel the joyful energy and organized chaos, new synapses forming in visitors’ minds, and people buzzing about, engaging with the many STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)- inspired activities throughout the room.

Community Service at PCS
Peconic Community School 4th, 5th, and 6th graders are keeping busy this winter. Along with their intensive academic work, they are making time each week to support the local community.

On Kindness
At PCS we give our students lots and lots of opportunities to be of service to others, without reward, for the pure pleasure of doing so. We offer them the simple opportunity to be kind. But we don't stop at the deed; rather, we spend time identifying needs right in front of our eyes, figuring out correct responses to those needs, and then reflecting on how it made us and the recipients feel.

What does it mean to challenge students?
Lately, my oldest has been coming home from school saying, “Mom, school is haaaard.” He goes on to enumerate the ways, the subjects, the specifics. I empathize with him, of course, but secretly I’m just excited.

October 2015: Stopping to Notice
It’s amazing how hard it can be to just...notice. There is always so much to think about, to foresee, to consider, to worry about, to remember, to deliberate upon, to plan for, to fix, that all our attention is so often stolen from us, lost in the ever worrying buzz of our brains. We’re hardwired this way. It’s not bad, necessarily. We use these capacities to protect ourselves, and our children, from danger, to solve problems, to learn, to improve at our jobs.

October 2014: Loose Parts
Education Director and Facilitator Sharon Cook led a Community Coffee conversation on the theory of loose parts and how we employ it at PCS.

June 2014: On Trust
