At Peconic Community School we choose to observe Dr. MLK Jr. Day each year with a “day on” rather a day off, with all students gathering at school for a day of education, action and service to honor and amplify Dr. King’s mission for justice, equity and inclusion.
This year, the PCS Student Council, comprised of elected representatives from Grades 3 through 8, has organized a very special celebration here at our new Cutchogue Campus. We hope you will join us on Monday, January 15th, MLK Day, from 11am to 1pm for a student-led Justice March and Community Celebration!
We’ll kick off our Justice March at the PCS front steps at 11am and follow students on a short march through the immediate neighborhood before reconvening at the school to hear speeches from PCS students who will be joined by the Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force. After the March, students will host booths offering baked goods, a display of their recent work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, art activities, music and stories, field games and even a bonfire with s’mores and hot chocolate!
Additionally, PCS Co-Director Liz Casey Searl will lead school tours throughout the afternoon for anyone visiting campus for the first time and/or interested in learning more about enrollment and the PCS approach to education.
