Explore. Create. Connect.

Where children

A progressive education for our time. Peconic Community School was founded in 2012 with a clear understanding that today’s schools need to educate children for an uncertain future, one whose opportunities and challenges are difficult to predict. PCS helps children learn to become self-motivated, skilled creators who are prepared to shape their futures and improve their communities. We believe the goal of education should be to make the world a better place.

How we Explore.

Children chart the path. Inspired by models such as the Reggio Emilia and Montessori approaches, education at PCS is learner-centered: the flexible curriculum adapts to the diverse and changing learning styles, intellectual interests and social-emotional development of our students. Our curriculum is relevant and responsive.

Exposure creates expansion. Whether it’s a guest speaker who is a leader in their field, an off-campus internship or accomplished athletes introducing new sports, we believe in exposing children to a broad range of innovative individuals and experiences.

How we Create.

We learn by doing. Learning at PCS is project-based: students engage in hands-on, authentic learning experiences that integrate academic disciplines to develop real world problem solving skills. PCS students use traditional tools such as direct instruction and skills practice, but they also go deeper, as they tinker, build, write, calculate, draw and experiment each day with a curriculum that challenges them to think both critically and creatively.

In the real world. Academic disciplines are integrated in thematic study. Like real-world projects, student work at PCS is multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary, multi-dimensional and purposeful, incorporating elements of math, science, art, literature, and history within a broader context that is relevant and responsive to real world applications.

How we Connect.

To self. We believe that children’s social emotional well-being is essential. Children who are able to pause and look within to find strength, resilience, clarity, and self-awareness are uniquely prepared to soar into the future.

To environment. PCS is fortunate to occupy 10 idyllic acres in a historic coastal town. Outdoor learning, exploration and conservation are core to the curriculum. We take full advantage of the many environs our campus offers and embrace all kinds of weather.

To community. Students connect to and learn from our unique place, the East End. Its professionals and citizens, its culture and history, anchor the threads of our learning to a local context that is meaningful and accessible to students. On campus, students learn together as a school-wide community in our trimester-long integrated units.

We cultivate all of these connections through a culture of caring — caring to seek and reach, outward and inward.
