Deepening a Math Lesson with Manipulatives

🔢 Double digits!! Mathematicians are using base ten blocks to approach double digit addition and subtraction with a keen eye to the tens values inherent in the problems. Too often, early math students can get hung up on the mechanics of the two columns in stacked double digit equations written on paper. Starting with the base ten blocks in hand reinforces visually, tactically and conceptually that students are in fact adding and subtracting multiples of tens when they work with double digits. As is often the case, using hands-on manipulatives actually elevates the math learning; it doesn’t make it more elementary.
