Manipulatives in Literacy

Today, first graders utilized letter tile manipulatives to encode and tap out CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words like cat, can, run, rug, bug and bat. Using manipulatives in early literacy is a game changer. Manipulatives transform abstract letter sounds and names into concrete, tangible tools for our young readers. The power of these simple tools is invaluable. They engage multiple senses at once - students can touch, see, and hear each sound as they learn. This multi-sensory approach doesn’t just make learning fun; it significantly boosts memory retention. By physically handling the letters, our kinesthetic learners thrive, while visual learners benefit from seeing the word take shape before their eyes. And, using discreet tiles for each letter makes it easier for children to tap out each letter sound when it’s time to blend them into words.
