Celebration of Learning: The Music Lab

During the winter trimester, every class at PCS was united by a single integrated unit: The Music Lab: Sound, Story, and Connection. Across eight classrooms, students approached music not as a single subject, but as a shared lens. The youngest students explored music as feeling and culture — Early Childhood 3/4 through the significance of nursery rhymes, Early Childhood 4/5 through the ways music conveys emotion. Kindergartners studied sound waves and built their own instruments; first graders researched the ukulele, learned to play it, and gave a concert; and second graders designed and constructed a sound garden wall for the school's natural playscape. Third graders dove deep into the Harlem Renaissance and recreated the Savoy Theater in their classroom, while fourth and fifth graders explored how film scores express emotion, and middle schoolers studied the science of human sound perception. 

The unit culminated in PCS's signature Celebration of Learning — a night when families filled transformed classrooms and listened as students presented months of real, hands-on, project-based work in their own words. These were students who were deeply invested in what they had made, because they had spent a trimester deeply invested in what they had been learning. Presentation is considered an essential stage of the learning process at PCS — not a performance, but the moment when students stand behind their work, articulate what they discovered, and share it with a school community that has been deep in the same inquiry.
