Middle School Reef Raisers!

🦪 Middle Schoolers are Reef Raisers! PCS has the first middle school to pilot the Cornell Cooperative Marine Reef Raisers program, which offers students the opportunity to raise juvenile oysters in the classroom, observe and track their growth, and eventually seed a reef in Peconic Bay.

Cornells's Meadow Makers, Back to the Bays and Reef Raisers programs (all of which PCS Middle Schoolers are a part of) work to reestablish healthy marine ecosystems by seeding and growing marine vegetation and shellfish species.

Through the Reef Raisers program, PCS Middle Schoolers are lucky enough to have their own ecosystem to observe, track and manage right in their classroom. They’re measuring and tracking the oyster spat growth, assessing and controlling the algae levels in the tank, and learning to extrapolate results from representative samples in the tank.

Thank you so much to CCEMarine for the opportunity to be the youngest Reef Raisers on the East End. We’re thrilled and honored!
