✨PCS Community: Tomorrow is First Friday! Classrooms will be open for the morning from 8:45 to 9:15 for you to visit. First Fridays are the perfect, informal opportunity for families to check in with the students, experience a little classroom life for yourselves and have a peek at some of the works in progress happening in the classes. ✨Immediately following open classrooms, at 9:15, we’ll hold our third Community Coffee of the year in the upper level library focused on DEIJ Education at Peconic Community School. DEIJ coordinator Nicole Moodie will join Co-directors Liz Casey and Kathryn Casey Quigley to talk about how social justice education, DEIJ and ABAR education unfold at PCS. #firstfriday #openclassrooms #familypartnerships #communitycoffee #socialjusticeeducation #DEIJ #ABAReducation #peconiccommunityschool
Kicking off our Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. The mission of BLM at school is to work to address racial injustice in education, embody Black joy, confront anti-Blackness and build authentic partnerships with all who support creating equitable school communities across the nation. This week as a community we’ll explore the 12 guiding principles of BLM at school: Collective Value, Diversity, Restorative and Transformative Justice, Trans-Affirming, Disability Justice, Queer-Affirming, Unapologetically Black, Loving Engagement, Intergenerational Love, Black Villages, Black Women, and Globalism. Today students are focused on Restorative Justice and Loving Engagement. From Middle Schoolers listening to a podcast episode from Heather Cox Richardson on the importance of February 1st for Black history, to ECs and K gathering for a community reading of @coilyandcute Sharee Miller’s Don’t Touch My Hair, we’re considering how we engage as a community in a just and equitable way. How do we love each other? And how do we make amends when we make mistakes? How do we confront the injustices that permeate our history, and how do we ensure equity today? @blmatschool #blacklivesmatteratschool #weekofaction2025 #restorativejustice #lovingengagement #diversity #globalism #collectivevalue #transaffirming #queeraffirming #disabilityjustice #blackwomen #blackvillages #intergenerational #unapologeticallyblack #blackjoy #progressiveeducation #independentschool #northforklongisland #peconiccommunityschool

❄️How lucky are we to have an outdoor classroom covered in snow! Early Childhood tracked some rabbits, deer and foxes, and compared their own tracks to those of the animals. So much to be discovered; thank goodness a little cold weather doesn’t stop us from venturing outside at PCS. Many thanks to our families for providing kids with the gear they need for outdoor adventures! #outsideeveryday #outdoorclassroom #outdooreducation #earlychildhoodeducation #handsonlearning #progressiveeducation #independentschool #northforklongisland #peconiccommunityschool

A message from our directors regarding recent immigration actions. In light of the new administration’s recent executive orders on immigration, and the courageous statements of local schools regarding these orders, Peconic Community School wants to express solidarity with these districts and reaffirm its commitment to ensuring our building is a safe haven for all people regardless of immigration status.    In addition to the legal protections afforded to schools and the children within them, PCS believes that schools should always be a place of safety and refuge. Our work as educators is to nurture, support and guide the hearts and minds of young people, and without the fundamental assurance of sanctuary and inclusion for every child within a school’s walls, that work is threatened.   Peconic Community School stands in solidarity with neighboring Riverhead Central School District and other local schools making statements in support of the protection of immigrant students in their district. Taking such a stance is brave, bold, legally sanctioned and necessary, and we hope to see more districts follow suit.    At PCS, while not anticipated, all staff have been informed to refuse entry to any immigration enforcement agency that seeks entry to our building, and to be in immediate touch with school leadership regarding their presence. In collaboration with our Board of Trustees, we will seek legal counsel prior to consenting to any action on the part of immigration agencies.   We commit to protecting the safety of our students, families and staff, and support the efforts of every school to do the same.  #peconiccommunityschool
Multiage learning is an integral part of the PCS approach. When students learn across age groups, something beautiful happens — older students reinforce their knowledge by teaching younger peers, while younger learners are inspired to reach higher. It’s the kid of natural, collaborative learning that prepares children for the real world.💫 Older students naturally step into leadership roles while younger ones gain confidence and advanced skills through peer learning. When our fifth and sixth graders work on reading with our first graders, or our Middle Schoolers work with Kindergarteners, or our third and fourth graders create poems with Early Childhood, they’re all growing in ways that go far beyond traditional classroom walls. Research shows multiage education better mirrors real life, where we constantly interact with people of different ages and experiences. It’s not just about academics — it’s about building empathy, leadership and lifelong learning skills. #multiagelearning #buddiesprogram #leadership #mentorship #inspiration #empathy #collaboration #realworldlearning #handsonlearning #letthemlead #progressiveeducation #independentschool #privateschool #northforklongisland #peconiccommunityschool

The Middle School teaching team will be joined by Director of Teacher and Learning, Shannon Timoney, and co-directors Liz Casey and Kathryn Casey Quigley, as well as current Middle School students and recent graduates to talk about the PCS Middle School experience. You’ll learn more about how we blend academic rigor with hands-on, student-driven learning, with a focus on both collaboration and developing independent inquiry skills, all within the context of nurturing social emotional well being throughout this tender and potentially tumultuous age.
